சுதந்திர போராட்டம் – மாவீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன்:
மாவீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் அவர்கள் தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்டம், கோவில்பட்டி அருகே உள்ள கட்டாலங்குளத்தில் முத்துக்கோன் – பாக்கியத்தாய் அம்மாள் தம்பதியினருக்கு 11.07.1710 அன்று மகனாகப் பிறந்தார். தன் இளம் வயது முதல் சுதந்திரப் பற்று மிக்கவராக இருந்தார். மாவீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் ஆங்கிலேயரின் ஆதிக்கத்தை எதிர்த்து, போராடி வந்தார்.
இதன் விளைவாக, மாவீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் ஜெகவீரராம எட்டப்ப நாயக்கரின் நம்பிக்கைக்கு உரியவராகத் திகழ்ந்தார். நெல்லைச் சீமையிலுள்ள அனைத்து பாளையக்காரர்களிடமும் நேரடியாக வரிவசூலித்த ஆங்கிலேயர்கள், 1755 ஆம் ஆண்டு எட்டயபுரத்திற்கும் வரிகேட்டு ஓலை அனுப்பினர். இதனை எதிர்த்து, ஆங்கிலேயர்களுக்கு நாம் ஏன் வரி கட்ட வேண்டும் என்று எட்டயபுர மன்னரிடம் மாவீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் கடுமையாக வாதிட்டார். இதன் விளைவாக, எட்டயபுர மன்னரும் அழகுமுத்துக்கோனின் உணர்வினை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார். எட்டயபுர மன்னர் ஆங்கிலேயருக்கு வரிகட்ட மறுத்ததால், ஆத்திரமடைந்த ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் 1756 ஆம் ஆண்டு கான்சாகிப் என்பவரை நெல்லைச் சீமைக்குக் கமாண்டராக நியமித்தனர்.
கமாண்டர் கான்சாகிப்பின் பீரங்கிப் படையானது எட்டயபுரத்தை கடுமையாக தாக்கியதன் விளைவாக, எட்டயபுரத்தை ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் தங்கள் வசமாக்கினர்.
எட்டயபுரத்தை மீட்டெடுக்க வீரன் அழகு முத்துக்கோன் படை திரட்டி உரிய மாவேலி ஓடை, பெத்தநாயக்கனூர் பகுதியிலிருந்து வீரர்களுக்கு பெரும் போர் பயிற்சி அளித்து மன்னர் வெங்கடேஸ்வர எட்டப்பரும், விடுதலை வீரர் அழகுமுத்துக்கோனும் போரில் ஈடுபட்டனர். போரில் வெல்ல முடியாது என்பதை அறிந்த ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் படை இரவு நேரத்தில் உறக்கத்தில் இருந்த வீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் படையினரைத் தாக்கி 200க்கும் மேற்பட்ட வீரர்களை சிறைப்பிடித்தனர்.
வீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் மன்னிப்பு கேட்டால் உயிர்ப்பிச்சை தருவதாக ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர். “அடிமைப்பட்டு உயிர் வாழ்வதைவிட சுதந்திர மனிதனாய் உயிரைவிடுவோம்” என்று கம்பீரமாக வீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் முழக்கமிட்டார்.
வீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் படையில் உள்ள 255 வீரர்களை நடுக்காட்டூர் சீமைக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டு ஆங்கிலேயர்களால் கொடூரமாக தாக்கி சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். மாவீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் உடனிருந்த ஏழு வீரர்களையும் பீரங்கி வாயில் கட்டி வைத்துச் சுட்டுக் கொன்றனர். இந்த கொடூரச் சம்பவத்தின் மூலம் விடுதலைக்கான தாக்கம் தமிழகத்தில் ஏற்பட்டது.
விடுதலைக்கு வித்திட்ட சுதந்திரப் போராட்ட வீரர் மாவீரன் அழகுமுத்துக்கோன் அவர்களின் பிறந்த நாளில் அவரது தியாகத்தை நினைவு கூர்ந்து வரும் தலைமுறையினருக்கு எடுத்துச்செல்வோம்.
